Vernon LeRoy Salzman, aged 95, passed away on October 19, 2024 in Fort Worth, TX. Born on October 10, 1929, Vern, known affectionately as “Salty” to his colleagues, dedicated his life to his family, his work, and his community.
After graduating from Ottawa Township High School in 1946 he hitchhiked 9,000 miles across 29 states to find the perfect institution to further his education. This trip sparked his love of traveling and the National Parks. Vern graduated from the Northrop Aeronautical Institute in 1949. His career at General Dynamics in Fort Worth spanned over four decades; he started in 1949 and retired as the Manager of Engineering Flight Test in 1993. His commitment to learning and teaching never waned, as he was always eager to share his knowledge on a variety of subjects, ranging from engineering to the intricate workings of everyday objects.
A devout member of Meadowbrook-Poly United Methodist Church, Vern participated in numerous church activities. He also volunteered at local elementary schools working in the library, with the UIL Oral reading competition, the Robotics club, and science nights.
His hobbies included fishing, bowling, bridge, euchre, and traveling. Always a problem solver, he was the first to offer help with any technical or mechanical issue, whether it involved household repairs or computers, much to the benefit of those around him.
Vern was a cherished husband, father, and friend. He was preceded in death by his wife, Midge Salzman, and granddaughter, Andrea Prescott. He is survived by his daughters DeDe Appleby and Julee Kilpatrick; son-in-law Craig Kilpatrick; grandchildren Austin Appleby and wife Joanna Rives, Ryan Appleby, Alaina Appleby, Connor Kilpatrick, Carter Kilpatrick and Michael Prescott; great-granddaughter, Lily Prescott.
