Annette Berube died peacefully with family at her side on January 26, 2026 in Scarborough, Maine at the age of 103. She was born in Lewiston, Maine on January 23, 1923, the daughter of Amedee and Olivine Richard Kirouac.
Annette grew up on a dairy farm on Grove Street in Lewiston and attended the one-room Scribner Schoolhouse, where she developed a lifelong love of learning that she later passed on to her children and grandchildren. In 1940, she graduated from Lewiston High School at the top of her class. Following high school, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Vincent Bottling Company throughout WWII, and later for F.X. Marcotte Furniture on Lincoln Street.
On October 12, 1946, Annette married the love of her life, Lionel B. Berube, a longtime executive at H.P. Hood. Together they raised 5 children, Denise, Anne Marie, Robert, Janice and Michael. Lionel predeceased her on December 19, 2005 after 59 years of marriage.
Annette's faith was central to her life. She was a lifelong member of Holy Family Parish and the St. Anne’s Sodality, served in the Pastoral Care Ministry, and taught Catholic education to young parishioners. She was a past treasurer of La Survivance Francaise, a lifetime member of St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary and a volunteer for Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
Annette enjoyed bowling with the Senior Bowling Team and spending winters in Florida with Lionel after his retirement. She was the ultimate hostess—always ready to welcome friends and family and never one to miss a celebration. An avid writer, she lovingly penned her memoirs for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Her happiest moments were spent at family gatherings. Known for her wonderful sense of humor, Annette delighted in conversation and often led her family in song. She was an accomplished piano player and a joyful presence. In later years, while living at St. Mary’s Residence in Lewiston and at Scarborough Terrace, she was known by residents and staff alike for her warm smile and kindness. Active until her final days, she played bingo with gusto, dressed up for Halloween, and joyfully joined in caroling.
Annette is survived by her daughters Denise Martel of Rye, NH; Anne Marie Mailhot and her husband Reginald of Wells, ME; Janice Latulippe and her husband David of Freeport, ME; and her sons Robert Berube and his partner Carolyn Rapier of Union City, CA, and Michael Berube and his wife Michele Tucci of Washington, DC. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren—Randy, Jennifer, Meghan, Audrey, Sarah, Matthew, Kassy, Sam, Abigail, Emily, Marisa, Anthony, Giancarlo, and Luca—and ten great-grandchildren: August, Lucien, Owen, Sophie, Beckett, Scarlett, Soren, Nasra, Shafiq, and Marshall.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brother Lionel Kirouac; her sisters Emilienne Pinard (of Canada), Yvette Carrier, and Cecilia Belanger; and her son-in-law Frank Martel.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Scarborough Terrace and Compassus Hospice Care for their exceptional kindness and support.
