From her early years, Janis carried herself with a steady determination and quiet strength. In high school she played basketball, graduated from Gardiner High School, and found joy in riding horses with her friends—simple pleasures that reflected a spirited resolve and an appreciation for life’s everyday gifts.
Janis devoted herself wholeheartedly to her home and family, taking pride in caring for her children with a generosity that shaped the lives around her. After her children grew up, she brought that same steadfast work ethic to roles in a shoe factory and later as an apple packer for West Breeze Orchard. She also served as a caretaker, offering time and attention in ways that spoke to her strong sense of responsibility and care for others.
In October 1959, Janis married Lawrence Nelson. Throughout their marriage, they shared a love of motorcycle riding, and together they raised eight children—building a life marked by perseverance, and the kind of love that is felt long after words end.
Janis also made room for the things that brought her happiness, the most important was her grandchildren that she enjoyed spending moments with. She also loved bowling and played in league, and she enjoyed drawing—interests that offered both companionship and quiet moments of expression. In all settings, she was cherished, and her presence carried a steadiness that family and friends came to rely upon.
Janis is survived by her children - Christiner Nichols, Lori Nelson and partner Joe, Lisa and husband Alan Gray, Paula and husband Dean Berube, Linda and husband John Varney Sr and Leanne Nelson and partner Tim. She is also survived by many grandchild, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
