John M. Roy, 75, of Lewiston, Maine, passed away on July 18, 2025, in his hometown. A creative spirit with a deep appreciation for art, good food, and life’s quieter pleasures, John left behind a legacy as vibrant and original as the collages he loved to create.
Born in Lewiston on January 5, 1950, John was the son of the late Robert P. Roy and Margaret Donahue Roy. He grew up in Maine and Connecticut, graduating from Manchester High School in 1968. He went on to study at the University of Connecticut from 1968 to 1971, where his interests in the arts and humanities continued to develop.
John was a gifted sketch artist and painter, and he expressed himself through everything from intricate collages to impromptu performances. He had a natural talent for acting and singing and once appeared as an extra on the classic television series Route 66 in 1963. Later, he combined his creative and entrepreneurial interests as the producer of a real estate-focused television show.
A passionate and truly remarkable cook, John had a flair for the culinary arts that bordered on gourmet. He delighted in crafting beautiful, flavorful meals from scratch and treated cooking as both a science and an art.
He was also a lifelong tennis enthusiast who relished time on the court as much as he did in his studio.
Though John was briefly married twice once in the early 1970s and again in the 1980s his truest and most enduring relationship was with his older brother, James “Jim” R. Roy. The two shared not just a lifetime of memories but an unbreakable bond built on trust, laughter, and friendship.
John is survived by his brother Jim Roy of Falls Church, VA. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert P. and Margaret Roy.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Visitation for John on Thursday, July 24th from 4PM to 6PM, followed by an in house Memorial Service at 6PM at The Fortin & Pinette Group 217 Turner Street, Auburn.
A Graveside Service will take place on Friday, July 25th at 11AM at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mechanic Falls.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in John’s memory.
John’s life was a work of art - original, expressive, and deeply thoughtful. He will be remembered with love and missed beyond words.
