AUBURN-John A. Wotherspoon, 100, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Clover Manor Health Care Facility. He was born in East Providence, Rhode Island on June 13, 1926, the son of Alexander and Mary (Robertson) Wotherspoon. John spent summers in Leeds, Maine, where he met the love of his life, Helen Pettingill.
After graduating from East Providence High School in 1944, John served in the Army Air Force during WWII as a tail gunner in a B-29 bomber. When the war concluded he returned to Maine, marrying Helen in 1948 and raising their two daughters in Auburn. John earned a master plumbers license, and later managed his own company, L.W. Haskell, a commercial plumbing contractor involved in the construction of many area schools. Helen worked as bookkeeper and office manager for the company.
John was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 2013; his daughter Linda Bryant in 1998; his daughter Cheryl Perrino in 2025; and his granddaughter Anne Perrino in 2018. He was also predeceased by brothers Richard, Donald, and Robert Wotherspoon; and sisters Lois Clemm and June Lefebvre. He is survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
John was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling, activities he continued into his nineties. He loved spending time at his camp at Thompson Lake, which he carefully renovated with his own hands. John’s best times were spent with his family in lively conversations while enjoying a cup of tea. In April of 2023, he enjoyed a special “Honor Flight Maine” experience arranged by his nephew, Robbie Wotherspoon. Although John will be missed by many, there is comfort in the knowledge that he is reunited with his beloved family.
The family will gather for a celebration of life on November 7th.
Arrangements are in the care of The Fortin & Pinette Group, 217 Turner Street in Auburn, 783-8545. To share memories and condolences with the Wotherspoon Family, please visit www.fortinpinettegroupauburn.com .
