

Joyce T. Hanson, 59, of South Main St. Auburn, died Sunday January 16, 2011, at St. Mary’s R.M.C. with her loving family at her side. She was born in Lewiston on July 2, 1951, a daughter of the late Laureat and Evangeline (Saucier) Michaud. Joyce attended St. Louis School and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1969. She went on to graduate from the University of Maine – Portland/Gorham, with a degree in teaching. Joyce married the love of her life, Melville R. Hanson, Jr., on June 25, 1971. He predeceased her on November 17, 2004. Joyce taught in the Auburn School System for 19 years retiring in 2006. She loved all her students and when asked how many kids she had she would always reply over 20. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church where she taught CCD for many years. Joyce was an avid reader and enjoyed many handcrafts such as needlepoint, knitting and sewing. She took great pride in her own three children, being very active in their lives and supporting all their efforts. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with family, especially her children and grandchildren. She leaves two daughters, Jessica Hanson of Auburn; Kathleen McGowan and husband Rob of Auburn; a son, Joel Hanson of Portland; four grandchildren, Gavin Hanson and Kiera, Keegan and Kelsea McGowan, all of Auburn; three sisters, Jacqueline Sawyer and husband Richard of MN; Pauline and husband Denis of Lewiston; and Linda Holdway of CO; a brother Richard Michaud and wife Joan of CO; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother-in-law, William Holdway. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Chapman House and all people who helped her through her many illnesses and rehab.
