1958-2021
Larry L. Gordon, 63, lost his courageous 5-year battle with pancreatic cancer on Friday, October 15, at the Androscoggin Hospice House, with family by his side.
He was born July 30, 1958 in Rumford, ME to Lincoln and Sylvia (Holman) Gordon. He graduated Edward Little High School in 1977 and University of Southern Maine in 1981, and married the former Dawn Allen in June, 1984. Larry's teaching career spanned 40 years with 2 years at Gardiner Area High School where he was also assistant Hockey Coach to the Class B state championship hockey team. The last 38 years were spent at ELHS where he enjoyed his role as Department Head of Aspirations. His love of teaching was apparent in his refusal to retire, even after his cancer diagnosis, and in his patience and treatment shown to his students.
Growing up he enjoyed the outdoors, taking annual trips with his dad and friends to the Allagash hunting & fishing. As a youth, Larry was a Boy Scout excelling at fly tying and played hockey & baseball. Attending his children’s and then granddaughter’s activities were special to him, as were extended family lobster feeds with homemade ice cream.
His involvement in sports reflected his love of the games, playing both baseball and hockey through college and beyond, coaching youth baseball & soccer, ELHS hockey, Gray & EL softball, and finally AMS baseball. Larry also was an active umpire, and served on the Jamie Benson Scholarship Committee, Auburn Youth Hockey board, and was President of Auburn Suburban Little League for many years. He enjoyed being the official scorekeeper of EL Basketball games and working the Maine State Basketball Championships at the Augusta Civic Center.
Larry spent several years as President of the Printing Excellence Program which recognized businesses and schools statewide and awarded scholarships to students. He created a partnership with New England School of Metalwork for EL students. As the graphics instructor, he also printed for other entities in the city of Auburn, and was a member of the National, Maine, and Auburn Education Associations.
He is fondly remembered for his contributions to the community including volunteering for Androscoggin Relay for Life, and as a member of the Auburn Grandstand Club where he loved being the grill-master at EL football games. Summers were dedicated spending time with his family who meant everything to him. He spent his winters making an ice rink in his backyard for his kids and neighbors. He especially enjoyed his time at camp in Weld, and watching the NE Patriots, Red Sox, and Boston Bruins.
Larry is survived by his wife Dawn, daughter Kristi, son Mathew and girlfriend Megan Thomson, granddaughter Adalyn, sisters Marcia (Richard} Jolicoeur, Deborah (Dennis) Heffernan, and Cathy Stevens and companion Mike Seguin, many cousins, nieces and nephews, nephews-in-law, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Fortin Group, at 217 Turner St. in Auburn, on October 29 from 2-4pm and
6-8pm. The Celebration of Life will be at East Auburn Baptist Church, at 560 Park Ave. in Auburn, on October 30 at 11 am. Please follow COVID safety. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Dana-Farber, CMMC, and Hospice House for their exceptional compassion and care. Also, thanks go to his extended family, special friends, peers, and students for their friendships and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gordon Strong, and sent to EL at 77 Harris St, Auburn, ME 04210 for a scholarship and other community contributions that will be made in my dad's name.
