SALEM, NH- Leonard J.H. St. Pierre, age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2026, with his family by his side. His passing followed a brief period of declining health. He will be remembered for his enduring vitality and the love he shared with his family.
Born June 16, 1935, in Lewiston, ME, to Joseph and Marie-Anne (Caron) St. Pierre, Len grew up in a predominantly French-speaking French-Canadian community in Lewiston where he attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and St. Dominic’s High School. In high school, Len played football and hockey, but had to leave the teams to work and help his family pay his tuition. He said chorus was his favorite activity and he joined a singing group, The Four Notes, which sang at local functions and even made a TV appearance. He met his future wife, Annette, at a high school hockey game, but they didn’t date until after graduation.
Len attended Bentley College and earned a degree in Accounting. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he sometimes skipped school to see a game at Fenway Park. Len saw Mel Parnell pitch a no-hitter on July 14, 1956, which he called one of his biggest thrills. He moved to New York City after college for his first job at United Fruit Company, but he was soon drafted into the Army. Just before he had to report to Ft. Dix, he married Annette Martel on June 14, 1958. The newlyweds lived in Trenton, NJ, while Len was stationed at Fort Dix for his two years of service.
After the Army, Len returned to United Fruit, where he spent almost his entire 40-year career. Len was at the leading edge of the computer revolution; he took advantage of an opportunity to become one of the first computer programmers, attended training at IBM, and moved to Boston where United Fruit was implementing new technology. During his career, Len was known to friends and family for his work on the Chiquita brand, often bringing home banana-themed gifts to his kids' delight.
Len and Annette lived in many places during their 68 years of marriage, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey (twice), Ohio, Bermuda, and South Carolina, before Len retired and they moved back to their beloved home state of Maine. Len was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, an avid Boston sports fan, and a lover of Latin music. He and Annette spent their retirement traveling to such places as China, Ukraine, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Eastern Europe, South Africa, Egypt, and Peru. Len and Annette recently lived at Schooner Estates in Auburn, ME, before a move this year to Greystone Farms at Salem, NH, to be closer to their children.
Leonard is survived by the love of his life, Annette; his four children, Venise St. Pierre (Norman Beck), Daniel St. Pierre, Judith Barlow (Andrew), and Michelle Fine (Ted); grandchildren Christopher and Derek St. Pierre, Monique Lee (Ryan), Isabelle Daniels (John), Madelaine Belhassen (Hugo), Sam, Angus and Lucy Barlow, and Noah, Lily and Piper Fine; and great-grandchildren Tigerlily, Annabell, Jackson, Zelda, John, and Victoria.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Venise Wonderly.
Len's funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 15th, 2026 at 10:00AM at St. Philip Church, 2365 Turner Road, Auburn, followed by a reception at Schooner Estates, 200 Stetson Road, Auburn. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
