It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rachel Marie (Tardif) St. Pierre, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and cherished friend to many. Rachel passed away peacefully at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will never be forgotten.
Rachel was born on October 19, 1939 , the daughter of Raymond and Marie-Rose (Leblanc) Tardif of Magog Quebec.
In her early years, she attended Catholic school in Canada. Growing up on a farm, she was one of the eldest of 12 children. At the age of 13, she made the decision to take a break from school to help her parents take care of her 9 younger siblings. At the age of 18, she returned to School and earned her high school diploma.
On December 26, 1959 she married Joseph Paul St. Pierre from Lewiston, Maine and together they lived a full life raising 4 children: Denis, Michael, Cynthia and Marsha. Their marriage lasted 64 years until Paul’s passing on October 16, 2023. Rachel and Paul resided in Auburn for a number of years before moving to Oxford, Maine. Rachel was a member of Lady of Ransom church in Mechanic Falls and Sacred Heart Church in Auburn.
Rachel had a servant heart, and was devoted to caring for and helping her family and friends. In 1970, she began work at Marcotte Nursing Home in Lewiston and took courses under Sister Florence becoming certified as a nursing assistant and medication technician. Shortly thereafter, her grandmother, Lydia moved into the family home and Rachel lovingly took care of her for many years while raising her own young family until her grandmother turned 100 years old. In 1987, she went back to work for John Murphy Homes in Mechanic Falls as a CNA/DT/AC where she took care of clients with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities for 25 years until her retirement at the age of 74. She took much pride in her work and cared for clients as if they were her own family. Around this time, she also welcomed her elderly cousin Rose into her home so that she could take care of her until Rose passed away at 90 years old.
After her retirement, Rachel spent her time helping Paul do home projects. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and growing vegetables and herbs. She will be fondly remembered for replicating her mother’s meat pie and pecan pie recipes perfectly. Rachel appreciated all the beauty in nature. She truly loved creating flower gardens and peaceful surroundings with her lighted decorations. She enjoyed watching sports on TV - especially the Red Sox games and the Canadian Hockey games. She cherished the memories she made spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 2012, she and Paul traveled to Dubai to visit her daughter Marsha and her family. Most recently, she was able to travel back with her daughter Cynthia to her home town in Canada to spend time with her family and friends.
Rachel was predeceased by her parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters and her husband Paul.
Rachel is survived by her 4 children: Denis (Therese) and Michael (Dyen) Cynthia, and Marsha (Sofian), 11 grandchildren: Sarah (Christian), Heather (Andrew), Kate-Lyn (Michael) Denis Jr (Andi) Kelsey, Jacob, Ibraheem, Imran, Emaan, Ayah and Zainab. She is also survived by 8 great grandchildren Emma, Brynn, Oliver, Jack, Adaline, Ethan, Emilia and Iris. She was lovingly known as “Mem” (Memere) and loved and cherished her family. She was so grateful to have been able to use Facetime to meet her newest great grandchild, Iris, in the weeks prior to her passing.
Rachel will be dearly missed by all her family and friends. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to everyone who reached out to support her through her illness. They want to especially thank Andwell Hospice (formerly known as Androscoggin Home Health and Hospice) for their compassionate guidance and care.
