Auburn, ME - Sharon “Gertrude” Ann Goding, 82, passed away on March 14, 2026. Born on July 22, 1943, in Lewiston, ME, a daughter of the late Robert A. & Florence E. (Stevens) Sylvester, she lived in Auburn, ME, after spending almost twenty years in The Forks, ME, and will be remembered as a brave, compassionate woman whose life was defined by love, curiosity, and a steady joy in the everyday moments. After her introduction, Gertrude’s warmth and resilience were simply unforgettable.
Gertrude grew up in Auburn, ME, and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1961. She carried with her a deep appreciation for home and for the people and places that shaped her, building a life rooted in family, shared adventures, and heartfelt connection.
On December 14, 1968, Gertrude married Dana S. Goding, and together they shared 57 years of marriage—years filled with partnership, laughter, and the kind of companionship that makes a life feel full and bright.
Gertrude found happiness in the outdoors and in creating things with her hands. She enjoyed fly fishing and tied her own flies, and she loved gardening—both flowers and vegetables and enjoyed mowing the lawn. Sharon also enjoyed picking berries and cooking pies and muffins with her haul. She also took pleasure in various crafts, camping, and traveling with her husband in their RV, spending much time in Florida. Among her many joys, she and Dana owned racehorses, and she especially enjoyed going to the different fairs to watch the horses race.
A proud member of the American Legion in Auburn, Gertrude valued community and belonging, showing up with kindness and an open heart. Her presence brought comfort, her spirit brought strength, and her compassion left an imprint that will last.
Gertrude is survived by her husband, Dana S. Goding; her sisters, Janet B. Morton (Geoffrey H.), Kathy M. Martin (Denis), and Joanne L. Berry, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas E. Sylvester and her sister Penelope S. Sylvester.
Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn.
In grateful recognition of those who cared for Gertrude, heartfelt thanks are extended to The staff from Andwel Hospice and Cancer Care Center.
