Auburn- William L. Vassar Jr. 82 of Auburn died suddenly at his home, surrounded by his family, on Christmas morning. He was born in Portland on August 6, 1929, son of the late William L. and Mary (O'Donnell) Vassar Sr. Bill was educated in Portland and graduated from Portland High School class of 1947. He later graduated from Wentworth Institute and USM with a BA and Masters. He proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Bill married the love of his life Camilla Salamone on June 16, 1941. He worked for many years at CMVTI, first teaching then as the Assistant Director until his retirement. After retirement he worked as a Home Inspector and an Inspector for Harriman Associates in Auburn. Bill was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He was very involved with the Riverton Little League where his son Bill Jr played baseball and served as past president of the league. He was also a member of Kiwanis Club, where he served as past president and the Portland Knights of Columbus. Bill was an avid golfer and member of Fairlawn Golf Course and enjoyed spending winters and golfing in Florida. Dad could repair anything and enjoyed doing all the projects he could for his children. He leaves his wife of 60 years Camilla of Auburn, two daughters; Rosemary E. Curtis and her husband Stephen of Chesapeake, VA and Karen E. Scammon and her husband James of Auburn, a son William L. Vassar III of Searsport, four grandchildren: Lacey Vassar, Joseph Scammon, Andrew Scammon and his wife Katelyn and Tyler-Rose Scammon as well as four great grandchildren.
