Born on July 25, 1945 in Omsk, Russia, she built her life around a close family and many devoted, lifelong friends. In her youth, she was an accomplished athlete in sport target shooting and later had a career in university administration. She met and married her lifelong best friend, Sergey Startsev, in 1966. Across 60 years together, they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and true companionship. Home was wherever they were together, and in the 2000s, they relocated permanently to Austin, Texas to be with their daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
Elena carried a rare and natural warmth that needed no translation, with a unique gift to create a lasting, genuine connection with anyone she met. Her bright spirit breathed beauty into the world around her, whether through her creative projects, thoughtful gift giving, or the flourishing gardens she nurtured with her green thumb. She was a devout follower of Jesus, and truly lived in His word. To know her was to be seen, welcomed, and loved. Her heart was big enough to make the whole world feel like family.
Friends and loved ones across the globe mourn her loss. We honor her memory through our own acts of kindness and will carry her with us always.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and son-in-law Henry G. Elizondo (husband of Vladislava). She is survived by her beloved husband Sergey; her daughter, Vladislava Elizondo; her grandchildren, Elena Toth (David) and Henry Elizondo; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
