Fay Lynn Hubertus, known to all as Lynn, passed away on October 6, 2026, at the age of 85, at the Watermark Assisted Living residence in Austin, Texas, where she had made her home since January of this year.
Lynn was born on August 27, 1941, in San Angelo, Texas, to Robert William Arhelger and Evelyn Faye (Holcomb) Arhelger. She and her brother, John, were both born in San Angelo, and the family moved to Austin in the late 1940s. Lynn graduated from Travis High School and attended Southwest Texas State College (now Texas State University), where she majored in education.
In 1962, Lynn married Lawrence Frank Hubertus who was an officer in the US Air Force. Their military travels took them to Reno, Nevada, where their daughter Julie was born, and then to Dayton, Ohio, where their son Bobby was born. The family spent three years in Japan, where Lynn worked as a school teacher, followed by a year back in Austin. They then moved to Clinton, Maryland, where their daughter Susan was born, and finally to Hill Air Force Base in Utah, where they lived for six years before returning to Austin for good. Lynn made a home for her family wherever the military sent them. She often talked about how she enjoyed the adventure of the military life and the sense of community that she felt there
While in Utah, Lynn earned a master's degree in counseling from Brigham Young University in the late 1970s. She went on to work as a drug and alcohol counselor in Ogden, helping people through some of the hardest chapters of their lives. After returning to Austin, she joined the Texas School for the Deaf as a counselor, where she served for many years until her retirement in 2007.
Lynn was not a religious person and did not believe in an afterlife. Instead, she was devoted to service of the human condition. She was a member of the Ethical Society of Austin, and later discovered and became a congregant and board member of the Wildflower Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin. Lynn was very generous with her time, serving neighbors in her community by volunteering with Meals on Wheels, CASA, the Austin Animal Center Town Lake and the Area Agency on Aging of the Capital Area among others.
Lynn enjoyed time with her grandchildren, making many trips to Las Vegas, NV to visit Julie and Jessica and to Mckinney TX to visit Susan, Carl and Lucy. She was a very playful and engaged grandparent who was always up for anything when it came to the grandkids.
Lynn was an accomplished seamstress, and her creativity was woven into her family's most treasured moments: she sewed her own wedding dress, as well as the wedding dresses of her daughters and her daughter Susan’s bridesmaids.
Lynn was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn in 2000 and Robert in 2007; her brother, John Arhelger, in 2015; and Lawrence Frank Hubertus, the father of her children, in 2019. She is survived by her daughter Julie Hall; her son Robert "Bobby" Hubertus; her daughter Susan Ferguson; her grandchildren Jessica Hall, Carl Ferguson, and Lucy Ferguson; and her great-grandchildren Cecily Martinez and Everly Martinez.
A gathering will be held on Saturday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m. at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 W. William Cannon Drive, Austin, Texas. The memorial service begins at 11:30 a.m.
