Obituary of Philip Herbert Thompson, III
Philip Herbert Thompson, III, 68, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 5, 2019. Philip grew up in Sunset Valley, TX with horses in his backyard. He was a member of the Sunset Valley Youth Drill Team. On his horse, Princess, he won many speed events and won 2 saddles from Travis County Sheriff Posse Fun Days competition. In high school (first graduating class of Crockett High School), he competed on bucking broncos and that lead to his breaking and training of numerous family horses. As an adult, Philip enjoyed horse racing and had some success on the race track, especially with his horse Bobbabon. He was a roper since his youth and later participated in team roping on his horse, Digger. He won several belt buckles from Booger Barter Team Roping competitions and brought home, yet, another saddle. Philip began his career with the Lockhart Road Company. He later started his own business in partnership with his father, Philip Herbert Thompson, Jr. under the name of PT Construction, Inc. which he ran until the time of his death. Philip and his wife, Augusta, purchased land in Cedar Creek, TX (Bastrop County), where he had cattle, horses, ducks and dogs. He was constantly making improvements on the land and many friends and family spent time around the fire pit, fishing the tanks, shooting skeet, riding horses or just socializing. Philip was generous with his time and talents and had many friends who enjoyed his company while hunting, fishing and playing poker. Philip had one daughter, Julie, and he would agree that she was his greatest accomplishment. He loved her and her husband, Jake, and the family that they created. Granddaddy treasured his granddaughters, Avery and Finley Kate and loved time spent with them. Philip was preceded in death by his father, Phil Thompson, his sister, Patsy Thompson Napier, and his brother Donald Wayne Thompson. Philip is survived by his mother, Jeanne Arnold Thompson; wife, Augusta Thompson; daughter, Julie Larkin and husband, Jacob; granddaughters, Avery and Finley Kate Larkin; step-daughter, Adelaide Benavides; sister, Bobbie Thompson Marrow and husband, Warren; brother-in-law, Warren Napier and wife, Cheryl; and several nieces and nephews who adored him. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. A Celebration of Philip’s Life will be at 4:00 P.M., Sunday, February 10, 2019 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with a Reception to follow. For those desiring, contributions may be made in Philip’s memory to MD Anderson Cancer Center.
