Raised in a military family, Richard moved frequently during his youth, but his heart always belonged to Texas. His early travels taught him adaptability and fostered a lifelong respect for the armed forces, leading him to honorably serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He carried the values of duty, discipline, and integrity into every chapter of his life.
A man of deep faith, Richard lived out his beliefs through his dedication to his family. He was a steady, loving presence for his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed staying active, spending much of his free time exercising alongside his good friend Chuck and keeping up his health over the years.
Richard was, above all, a storyteller. Once he got started on a good tale, he had a knack for trapping anyone in earshot until the story reached its full conclusion. He was also famous for his signature dad jokes—which, truth be told, were often met with light eye rolls from his captive audience, though no one ever chuckled harder at them than Richard himself. Always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, he brought warmth, comfort, and plenty of lighthearted moments wherever he went.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Carol; his four daughters, Jennifer Blakely, Natalie (Greg) Little, Sarah (Chris) Guevremont, and Rachael (Jesse) Hendricks; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his siblings Beverly (Tommy) Hutton, Robert Blakely, David “Mike” Blakely, and sister in law, Katherine Blakely. He is now reunited in peace with his parents, David and Gloria Blakely; his siblings Christopher and Noel Blakely; and his cherished grandchild, Isaac Guevremont.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
