Alice Frances Reed

Alice was born in Frost, TX to her parents Hugh Buchanan Ryan and Mabel Ryan. Alice was one of six children and her sister Allie May survives her. She was preceded in death by her siblings Hubert, Roy Albert, Thomas Gilmer, and Mattie Ethel. She met her husband Hugh Reed in 1941 and were married on May 16, 1942 in Denver, Colorado. During the War while Hugh served in the Middle East and Africa, Alice raised their baby boy, Jerry Reed, who was born November 2, 1943 in Bakersfield, CA. After the War, they settled in Bakersfield, CA and their daughter Janet Reed was born on Dec. 1947. Jill Reed and Jeff Reed, were born in Bakersfield in 1955 and 1957, respectively. She helped to raise Stanley Pierria in the late 1950s and early 1960s and mentored Jim Lehtinen in the 1970s and 1980s. Alice was a very devoted mother, grandmother and Christian. Hugh and Alice were charter members of Fruitvale Community Church (now known as Riverlakes Community Church) and involved in the church for over 60 years. Alice taught 3rd grade Sunday school for 20 years. She will be known as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She tirelessly worked with her husband to build a successful family farm, equipment business, and real-estate business. They worked to support many Christian causes. Alice will be greatly missed as our family matron. Alice is survived by her children Jerry, Janet, Jill and Jeff and her grand children Darren Reed, Hal Reed, Corky Pigeon, Heather Reed (went home to the Lord), Jonathan Hamlin, Lindsey Warnock (Reed), Jimmy Hamlin, Julia Reed, Ryan Reed and her great grand children Kristy, Jacob, Colby, Ryan, Grant, Kambria, Taylor, and Mason. Many others played an important role in her life such as her nephew Ricky Ryan; brother-in-law Bob Brockett; sister-in-laws Kay, Jessie, and Mildred; son-in-law C.T. Hamlin; daughter-in-laws Carol and Pam; Danny Hamlin; Claudia Basham; Tracie Reed; Bobbie Pigeon; Dena Reed; Julie Barron; Jon Strother; Mike Hamlin; many nieces and nephews; and her loving care givers Melba, Teresa, Vickie, Wanda, and Paula. Services will be on Wednesday, March 2nd, at Hillcrest Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canon Road, at 2:00p.m. A viewing will be at Hillcrest Mortuary on Tuesday, March 1st, from 4:00 to 8:00p.m..
