Betty Coursey

February 1, 1933August 5, 2013

Betty Coursey, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday August 5, 2013 at home in Bakersfield, California. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 am Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Church of Christ on 3011 Allen Road, Bakersfield, California, 93314. Mildred Elizabeth "Betty" McBrayer was born on February 1, 1933 in Alexander City, Alabama to Hazelton and Mildred McBrayer. She grew up as the third oldest of seven children. She married her first love Bud Thomas and had two children, Diane and Richard. They moved to Bakersfield, California and made a new home. Betty spent many years as an employee of Floyd's stores. She loved her work and would know your size the moment you walked in the door. It was during this time that her husband passed on. A few years later she was lucky to find love again and married Phillip Coursey. These two were a great example of how love, life, laughter and faith should be a part of everyday life. Phil passed on but left Betty with another great expanded family. That family extended to the Coursey, Sockwell and Taylors. Betty was then reunited with her high school sweet heart, Grady Goss, and married him. Grady passed on a few years later. Betty has spent the last few years with her best friends Pat, Patsy, Mary, and Rita. Throughout her life she dealt with lots of trials and tribulations but continued to be one of the happiest, most fun loving, spontaneous, spunkiest of women. Everyone who has been blessed to meet her knows that she knew how to live a full life with no regrets. She is survived by her two sisters, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and cousins who will forever remember how she contributed to their lives. We would also like to mention the extended Thomas family, who always treated her as a sister not just a sister-in-law.

I knew Betty when she and Grady lived some in Arizona. We worshiped together at the same congregation. Thought so much of Betty and Grady. Shirley Lovelady

I knew Betty through her former husband Phil Coursey, who was a close friend of my parents. She was a delightful lady. I know Phil loved her dearly, and that his years with her were the happiest of his life. She will be missed.
