Born Betty Jean Carr on February 6, 1929 in Black Oak, Arkansas. She taught herself to drive at twelve. In her teens she played four years of girls basketball in high school. Right after high school, she played a season for the All American Red Heads semi-professional basketball team
1948-1949. She moved to California in 1953 residing in Taft for a short time before moving to the 11-C Camp, where she met her husband, Walter Stewart whom she married in 1954. They shared nearly 65 years of marriage before his death on February 14, 2019.
Betty is survived and missed by son Mark and wife Brenda, daughter Carol and husband David. Granddaughters Melissa and husband Corey, Emma and fiancé Brad, Jennifer and husband Joe, grandsons Austin and fiancé Erin, Sam, Ben, and Josh and fiance Ericka.
Until the passing of her late husband, Betty was active with the local VFW Ladies Auxiliary, making lifelong friends and sharing a Thursday lunch date tradition for years. She and Walter enjoyed traveling, from bus trips around the state to several vacations abroad. Every where she went she was never without her pink lipstick. In fact, even in the hospital it was the first thing she requested. She also had a passion for shopping and filled her home with the treasures she found.
Her memory lives on with her seven great grandchildren and every heart she touched. She took care of everyone, giving selflessly to all she loved. Her children and grandchildren could never leave a visit without a strong hug and few dollars being slipped into their pocket. She was a rock in her family. Her sharp wit and slightly sarcastic sense of humor will never be forgotten.
Special thanks to the professional and compassionate staff at Pacifica Senior living for making her final years comfortable.
A graveside service for Betty will be held Monday, March 13, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306.
