She was born on November 26 to Ann and Robert Ritchie in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in the New Jersey area and was deeply religious as her father was a pastor. At thirteen her family moved to Moab, Utah.
During her teens she developed a love for horses and livestock. She made friends with a local cowboy and she enjoyed herding cattle and riding horses. During high school she was named Rodeo Queen at the Black Diamond Rodeo in Price, Utah.
After high school she attended Utah State University (USU) where she majored in Dietetics and minored in Animal Science. While at USU she met the love of her life Ralph Phillips, in a biochemistry class. She graduated with a B.S. and began working in the cooperative extension of Colorado. When Ralph asked her to marry him she returned to Utah and they were married on September 11, 1965.
She moved with her husband to Burns, Oregon and began working as an extension home agent for Oregon State. Her husband was drafted into the Army for the Vietnam War. At this time, she moved to El Paso, Texas to be with her husband. He was sent to Vietnam and she stayed in El Paso to work as a dietitian at local hospitals. When her husband returned, they moved back to Oregon where she began working as a dietitian at a local hospital and later for the WIC program in Union, Oregon. While in Union Ralph and Enid started a family and they had two beautiful girls.
In 1980 her husband got a job in Bakersfield, California and the family relocated. She worked for the WIC program for 17 years in Lamont as a dietitian. She later became a certified lactation consultant. She really enjoyed helping new mothers become successful at breastfeeding.
Enid’s greatest love was her family and friends and she was very proud of her accomplishments in nutrition and breastfeeding. During retirement she became involved in quilting and she regularly attended the Cotton Patch Quilters Group. She was also very active with the Kern County Cattlemen’s Association with her husband.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ralph Phillips, her two daughters Katy and Kelly, her sister Leila Judd and sister-in-law LaRae Clark.
