Gustavo (Gus) Moreno Melgoza was born on November 17, 1954, in Uruapan, Michoacán, Mexico. His parents, Celia Moreno de Melgoza and Manuel Cerda Melgoza, migrated with the family to Central California in August 1961. They settled initially in Arvin before living in DiGiorgio for seven years. In the summer of 1969, the family moved to Lamont, eventually relocating to Bakersfield in 1979. During his early adulthood, Gus lived briefly in San Luis Obispo, Hollywood, and Santa Barbara before returning to Bakersfield in the mid-1980s.
Gus was a highly intelligent individual who showed a sense of creative eccentricity. An avid music lover and true hard-rock fan, he sported long hair in the early 1970s. He later developed a passion for playing guitar, in both rock and Spanish flamenco styles. Gus was also a highly skilled basketball player; he excelled at playground ball and played nearly every day from his mid-teens through his early twenties.
In his mid-twenties, Gus began to struggle with mental illness. Due to the challenges of his diagnosis and the medications needed to manage his health, his family provided a constant source of support yet found no lasting solution. They worked compassionately to help him navigate his ailments and were deeply saddened by the difficulties he faced. Gus continued to live in Bakersfield until his passing on March 26, 2026.
Gus is survived by his father, Manuel; his siblings, Irma Estela, Manuel Jr., Hector, César, and Rose; along with an extensive list of nephews and nieces. His family prays for his soul to rest peacefully with our Supreme Creator.
God bless Gus and all those who loved him — he will live in our hearts forever.
