John David Sparks

July 20, 1942 – June 26, 2026

It is with sadness and love that we announce the passing of John David Sparks, who departed this life on June 26, 2026. John was born on July 20, 1942, to Thomas “Charlie” and Earline Sparks. He lived a life defined by service, dedication to family, and a genuine love for those around him.

After graduating from high school, John proudly enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for two years while stationed in Panama. During his military service, he became known for his exceptional swimming abilities, winning numerous swim competitions and earning the admiration of his fellow soldiers. His discipline, determination, and competitive spirit remained with him throughout his life.

John was the only son among six children, growing up alongside five sisters. This unique family dynamic helped shape his kindhearted nature, respect for others, and ability to relate easily to people from all walks of life. Family was always important to him, and he maintained close bonds with his siblings throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Earline Sparks, sisters, Charlene Higgins, and MaryBeth Sherwood. He is survived by his sisters Betty Jo Webb, Linda Wiggs, and Gloria Sanders, who will cherish a lifetime of memories shared with their beloved brother.

Above all else, John was a devoted father whose children were the pride of his life. He is survived by his daughter, Carri Sparks Rohrbach and her husband, Bryan Rohrbach; and his son, John David Sparks Jr. and his wife, Brandy Sparks.

He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Layton Rohrbach (Paige), Dalton Rohrbach, Brenden Sparks (Kassidy), Trenton Sparks, and Coleton Sparks. Although Alzheimer’s disease gradually limited his ability to share as much time with his grandchildren as he would have wished, they remain an important part of his family legacy and brought him great pride.

John faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease with courage and dignity. Those who loved him will remember not the illness that affected his later years, but the strength, character, and loving spirit that defined the greater part of his life.

Those who knew John will remember his strength, loyalty, sense of humor, and unwavering devotion to his family. Whether sharing stories of his Army service, celebrating family milestones, or simply enjoying time with those he loved, he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

John’s legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren, sisters, extended family, and friends. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who loved him.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to all those at Magnolia Place Assisted Living and Hoffman Hospice for the care, comfort and compassion they provided John and his family.

A graveside service will be held on July 20, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Hillcrest Memorial Park 9101 Kern Canyon Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93306
