surrounded by her loving family on August
27, 2016. She was born March 20, 1934,
in Aguilar, Colorado to Gladys and
George Shields. Marilyn moved to Bakersfield
in 1944 and graduated from
Bakersfield High School in 1953. She would
walk every day from school to
Bakersfield Inn and during that time, she met her husband,
Gene and they were married on November 28, 1953.
Together they had three children. Throughout her years as a homemaker,
she loved to play Bunco and cards with the neighborhood ladies and in 1975 she took up bowling.
As an avid bowler and she became a part of the 500 and 600 club tournaments and
enjoyed traveling with her team, winning championships all over
California. She loved, loved taking her trips to
Arizona to visit her best friend Sandy. They would venture
off together and gamble. She loved gambling in Las Vegas just as much
as she loved traveling to the beach. When Marilyn was not traveling, she was at home with her family,
enjoying the company, always cooking and baking for everyone. Family was all that
mattered to her. She loved to be around her children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren and would say, "they are what made me great!" She had a hand in
raising all of them and did so proudly. She was everyone's
"Groovy Grandma". Anyone who met Marilyn knew her as Grandma and she loved it, it meant
more hugs and kisses for her. She loved BBQ's and having her family and
friends over. The more the merrier. She never missed a birthday or family
function. She absolutely loved being a part of her
great-grandchildren's awards assemblies, concerts, sporting events,
dance recitals and graduations because watching them brought so much
joy to her heart. She was always ready to go somewhere and enjoyed
cruising around town, running errands and eating at her
favorite place, Sorella's. She never missed her weekly salon appointments
and loved getting her nails done.
Grandma was a beautiful, caring woman, spunky with a sense of humor.
Her one liners would always catch you off guard. Through her sickness,
she never lost her humor or love for life.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
A huge void will be left by her passing.
She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
