Bakersfield Stephen Hanes passed away on January 4, 2024. He was born and raised in Bakersfield, California. He graduated from West High School in 1975. He started his career with Santa Fe Railroad/Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway in 1979. He worked there for 23 years. He started as a Brakeman and worked his way up to an Engineer. He really loved his time at the Railroad. Not always the hours or the time away from family.
After leaving the railroad, he umpired for high school baseball for a couple of years and was very passionate about it. As we all know he was a very big sports fan! Any sport anytime.
Stephen was a loving husband, father, brother, papa and friend. His grandchildren were his world. He loved when they would come up to him and say, Papa... I love you, it just melted his heart. He had a deep love for his family and will be remembered for his unwavering support and the special moments they shared together. He had a smile we will never forget!
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, brother, and niece.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife Karen of almost 40 years, two sons, Travis and Zachary (Mandi) and two grandchildren, Carson and Kynnedy, two sisters, Dorothea and Angela as well as several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Stephen will be held Tuesday, February 6, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Funeraria Del Angel Hillcrest, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306. Following the funeral service will be a graveside service from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Historic Union Cemetery, 730 Potomac Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93307.
