

Steven Chavaria, 82, passed away suddenly in Bakersfield, California on February 14, 2026. He was born November 28, 1943, to Tobias “Toby” and Catherine Albitre-Chavaria. He attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School, and Bakersfield High School where his athletic ability in track and field (running 4:12 mile) earning him a rank to carry the Olympic Torch/Winter Games Opening Ceremony, 1960. Steven graduated from Bakersfield Jr. College, receiving his Associate of Arts Degree.
Steven proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966 as a painter/corrosion controller. After his military service, he married the love of his life, Sandra Burrola settling in Bakersfield and raising their two children. After his marriage separation, Steven met Wilma “Jeannie” Bagley where they shared a good life till her unfortunate demise in 2023.
Steven started work in the painting industry at the California Aqueduct and then began his career with the County of Kern as a painter and striper (road & sign) for more than 30 years, until his retirement. He was known for his particularity, professionalism, and work ethic in his craft.
He loved to take trips to his shooting club, Muzzle Loaders at Kelso Creek Valley; take a drive to the mountains, the beach, and to the casinos. He loved golf, camping and visiting family in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He had a passion for researching and preserving his native American heritage and culture. Steven was a pillar of strength and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor.
Steven was preceded in death by his daughter, Stephanie Sweet; father, Toby Chavaria; mother, Catherine Chavaria; brothers, James Chavaria, Anastacio “Blackie” Chavaria, John “Gilbert” Chavaria, Raymond Chavaria; sisters: Frances Gonzales, Pauline Vega, Barbara Rios, and Rita Martinez.
He is survived by his son, Steven Daniel Chavaria; son-in-law, Ross Sweet; sisters: Mary Alice Luevano (Albert), Virginia Burrola, and Deborah Bondshau-Montes; grandsons Jon Aleczander Sweet; and Nicholas Chavaria; great grandchildren Grayson, Kaleb, Rylee, and Remington; and numerous great nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
A viewing will be held Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 5:00–9:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. Bakersfield, CA 93306. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E Bear Mtn. Rd., Arvin, CA 93203 with honor scheduled.
