Steve was born on October 26, 1960, in Bakersfield, California to Lawrence and Virginia Scarbrough. He was a graduate of Arvin High School and went on to study Plant Agriculture at Fresno State University. Steve married his high school sweetheart Carrie (Handel) Scarbrough in 1983 and they had three daughters; Elizabeth, Jennifer, and Rachel. He was blessed with a wonderful family, and his girls were the light of his life.
During Steve’s childhood and high school years he developed a love for fishing and camping. He also had a love for music; playing drums for the Arvin High marching band, and was the drummer in a country band “The Wild Turkey Band.”
Steve worked at Bakersfield Country Club for 36 years as a certified Golf Course Superintendent where he left his mark by landscaping many areas of the Country Club. He was honored with multiple awards, served on many professional committees, was featured in numerous magazines, and recognized for some of the first drought-tolerant landscaping in Bakersfield. Steve was also a licensed landscape contractor and owner of Scarbrough Landscape Design where he designed many homes and businesses throughout Bakersfield.
Throughout Steve’s adult life he enjoyed all types of fishing, hunting trips with friends, and he dedicated several years to designing, developing, and hunting on his 140-acre property, “The Scarbrough Ranch” in Eufaula, Oklahoma. Recently, he and his family took an RV trip to Oklahoma a month before his passing; which he said was a trip of a lifetime.
Steven is survived by his wife of 34 years, Carrie Scarbrough; daughter Elizabeth (Gregory) White; daughter Jennifer (Adam) Papasergia; daughter Rachel Scarbrough (fiancé, Gregory LeFave); father and mother, Lawrence and Virginia Scarbrough; father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Betty Handel; sister Nancy (Bill) Smith; sister Lorri (David) Michael; sister-in-law Debbie (Victor) Pichardo; sister-in-law Michelle Kundert; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
