OBITUARY

Zachary Paul Blackhurst

April 27, 1984November 8, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Zachary Paul Blackhurst announces he passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 8th, at the age of 36. Zach entered this world on April 27, 1984 - the first child of Paul and Stephanie Blackhurst. He attended Highland High School where he wrestled and played football. He went on to Bakersfield College and later transferred to San Diego State University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration. He continued his education, earning a Masters of Business Administration from Cal State Bakersfield.

In 2012, Zach married his college sweetheart, Lisa, who was the love of his life. He was an amazing son and the epitome of a big brother, always looking out for his younger siblings. He was intelligent, inquisitive, driven, and generous to a fault. His gregarious nature earned him his first job at the age of 15 when he struck up a conversation with the owner of a local skate shop. He worked hard from then on, ultimately earning a position as a Chief Financial Officer in the healthcare field. Last February, he was honored with the Rising Runner award from Cal State Bakersfield as an alumnus excelling in his field.

Zach will be remembered not only for the truly great man he was, but for the incredible impact he left on the world. He was fiercely loyal to his friends and family. Anyone who met him immediately wanted to call him friend and if he counted you among his friends, you were a friend for life. He applied his unending energy to everything he did. Always open to new adventures, his life was a constant exploration and quest for fulfillment. He was an avid chef, who loved being in the kitchen creating amazing meals. He was a devoted sports fan, faithful to his San Diego Chargers and Padres. He loved his friends’ and family members’ children as if they were his own and never met a dog he didn’t like or a dog that didn’t like him.

Zach was a bright light in so many lives. He will forever be lovingly remembered by his wife Lisa, parents Paul and Stephanie, siblings Whitney and Samuel, grandmother Rosena Todahl, countless family members and friends, and his three beloved dogs. To say he will be missed, and missed by many, is an understatement.

A celebration of Zach’s life will be announced and held at a later date.

I knew Zach from when we were together at GEMCare. He was polite, well mannered, very bright and a professional young man. One day we had a conversation about family and traveling and I’ll never forget it. We talked about what is important in life and how much he loves spending time with his wife going on adventures and seeing the world just the two of them. It reminded me to focus on quality one on one time with my spouse. It’s a conversation I’ll never forget. Zach will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I for one am thankful I was fortunate enough to know him. Sincere condolences to his family and dear friends.

I was fortunate enough to have worked with Zach at DHMSO and he was always so kind to me, always wore a smile on his face. I loved that he had a picture of his wife on his desk and when I commented on how pretty she was, Zach’s face lit up. I am sadden that he is gone but am happy by the memories he has left me with. May you Rest In Peace Zach and your family find comfort and joy in the happy memories you had together.

You will be missed Zach.

I am still in shock over this tragic loss of an incredible person. I had the pleasure of working with Zach, along with his friendship, for several years.
Like many have shared, he was always available to help, eager and positive. No matter how busy, he always made time to assist.

To this day, I still use the quote from Zach when we developed business opportunities. I was especially frustrated with a situation and in his infinite financial wisdom (and sense of humor) he shared, “Everyone loves what you do-until you ask them to pay for it”.

I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues. I can only say how fortunate we all are to have known someone it is so difficult to say goodbye to. This makes no sense.

I had the honor and privilege to work and be friends with Zach. He was one of those stand up guys that you could always go to ask questions and he would always have a good answer to help. I am so grateful to have learned from him. His positive impact on others' lives will be greatly missed. You went too soon brother.
My deepest condolences to Zachary's family. Zach was one of the good ones and I will always cherish the memories.
Rest in peace Zach

I was filled with many emotions upon hearing of Zachs passing and even now as I type this, I'm once again filled with those same emotions. Although, Zach and I weren't the closest of friends in our later ages ( yes mid 30's is considered "later age" in 2020) he was apart of many of the golden memories I experienced as a kid. From playing on undefeated back to back champion youth football teams too skate boarding around the park. Any and all the memories I have of Zach are happy, pure and joyful; he was stand up guy and he will forever be missed and recognized as someone I was lucky enough to have come across in my life. Rest In Peace Zach, you will be missed.
