Obituary for Carolynn Anne Culp Giles

Carolynn changed addresses from Yermo, CA to Heaven for all Eternity on January 11, 2020. She was born on March 19th, 1935 in Marshall Town Iowa. She was the eldest daughter of Herbert and Clara Culp (deceased). She had a younger sister, Elaine Culp Teube Nash (deceased). She was the wife of Ralph Giles (deceased). She had four children: Sharon Giles of Yermo, Marshall Giles of Yuma, AZ, and Ernie Giles of Branscomb, CA, and Baby Ralph Giles (deceased). She is survived by three living children, several cousins, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carolynn worked at the USMC Logistics Base-Nebo, Yermo Annex, and at Fort Irwin. She retired in 1996. A few years before this, she was also a recipient of a Meritorious Unit Commendation Award for her contribution to the Desert Storm Campaign. During her years at the Marine Base she and Ralph were a part of a group of pinochle players. After her retirement she continued to play with a group in Barstow. Carolynn and Ralph were the first couple to be married at First Baptist Church in Barstow, CA. She served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School secretary, they both sang in the adult choir and she was a very happy member of the Not-Done-For-Yet Senior adult Choir. She traveled with them to sing in several locations and sang at Glorietta twice in New Mexico. As a young married couple Ralph and Carolynn moved to Yermo and began attending Yermo Bible Church. They sang in the choir there and reared their three children. They were both active in the Yermo community while supporting their children’s involvement in several activities like being on the local swim team, baton twirlers, boy scouts and girl scouts. Carolynn was a Boy Scout Den Mother. As her kids grew older and attended high school in Barstow she and Ralph and the kids returned to First Baptist Church. She and Ralph became involved in the kid’s high school activities. Barstow High School Riffian Band was a place where she could shine helping with being an aide to the band director, Ms. Margaret Barnett. She helped transport band uniforms and instruments. She helped with repairs to band uniforms before marching competitions and concerts and she made sure each band member had their music. Recently, as her health began to decline, it became more difficult to attend church in Barstow so she became a member of Silver Valley Baptist Church in Yermo, CA. She was accepted and loved by all those who met her and knew her. During her last Sunday at church before Christmas she was honored to receive a beautiful quilt hand made by one of the ladies in the church. During her last days she wanted that quilt to cover her. While she suffered from blindness and deafness, she died from dementia with Sharon by her side. She was 84 years old.

I called her mom. She was so wonderful n caring. I remember seeing her in Rimrock. She was so scared! But I kept her calm while I was there.
