I only knew Deede a couple of years through AUSA.  She was a dedicated board member who was always there to help in any capacity.   She had this dry sense of humor and you had to stay on your toes or she would get you with a fast quip or joke.  And she had this sly look with her eyes that would crack me up.  She was dedicated to her family and community and didn't worry about accolades.  Rest easy my friend, until we meet again. 🙏❤️

There are people who serve because they're asked, and then there are people like DeeDe, who serve simply because that's who they are. For decades, DeeDe gave her time, her energy, and her heart to this community. She didn't seek recognition. She pursued results. She wanted Barstow to be stronger, more united, and full of opportunities for others, especially our youth.
Whether it was through the Miss Barstow Pageant, the United Way, military support organizations, community events, or countless volunteer efforts, DeeDe was always there. If there was a fundraiser, she was helping organize it. If there was a young person who needed encouragement, she was there to mentor them. If there was a cause that benefited Barstow, chances are DeeDe had already rolled up her sleeves and gone to work.
One of the things I admired most about her was that she understood what community really means. It's not just where we live—it's how we care for one another. DeeDe lived that every single day. She built friendships that lasted a lifetime, she inspired volunteers to become leaders, and she made people feel like they belonged.
One of my most valued honors as Mayor, is I've had the privilege of meeting many people who have made a difference in Barstow. DeeDe will always stand out as one of those individuals whose influence reached far beyond any title she ever held. Her legacy isn't measured by awards or recognition. It's measured by the countless lives she touched, the confidence she instilled in young people, the organizations she strengthened, and the example she set for all of us.
Our community is better because DeeDe Crigler called Barstow home. While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate a life that was lived with purpose, generosity, and love for the City of Barstow.
On behalf of the Barstow City Council and the entire City of Barstow, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Crigler family, DeeDe’s many friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
