

Liz was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on July 24, 1932 to Dora and Jack Lyles. She was wife to Herbert Royer “Jerry” Mauk for 32 years. They lived in Cherry Point, SC, Key West, Florida and Pittsburgh, PA before finally settling in Barstow. They had five children, James “Jim”, Linda, Jack, Robert “Bob” and Lisa.
Liz owned the spice shop at Calico and made many friends during her time there. Her involvement with Calico was constant throughout her life. She spent many days greeting travelers and friends dressed in costumes of the era. Something she loved doing and she could talk to people about almost anything. She was the starting force behind many Calico events including the Gunfighters and the beginning of the Civil War Reenactment. She was deservingly inducted into the Calico Hall of Fame in 1974.
Liz was a big supporter of the Barstow area and surrounding communities. She participated in many activities and loved promoting her town. She had a great relationship with the Military and was involved with Ft. Irwin and MCLB activities. In 2004 Liz received a Lifetime Membership in the Barstow Chamber of Commerce for her many contributions to the community.
Liz received many awards and accolades in her life including the American Business Woman’s Assoc. Woman of the Year and Chamber of Commerce Woman of Continuous Service.
Liz and her mother Dora were founding members of “Dora’s Darlin’s” the first chapter of the Red Hat Society in Barstow.
Liz was preceded in death by her son Jack, one grandson and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her brother James of Florida, four children, Jim (MaryAnn), Linda, Bob (Carol) and Lisa; Twelve grandchildren, James, Robert, Josh, Tina, Jerome, Natasha, Jesse, Taylor, Trevor, Bret, Casey and Tatum; 21 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. in the Calico House Restaurant at Calico Ghost Town. Further information will be provided at a later time.
