Papa Louie was known by family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues as an intelligent man of exceptional friendliness, hospitality, and generosity. He was a man of great faith who actualized a profound vocation of service. He prioritized family bonds and taught that passion in work, responsibility, moral behavior, community service, formal education, humor and loving support were the keys to a better future for all of us. His children and grandchildren remember with great fondness his steadfast accompaniment and encouragement in all their childhood endeavors and his financial support during college years. He inspired affirmation, pride, and self-worth in all those in his care.
Louie served in the United States Navy in the 1950s at various locations including extended tours aboard the Squier-class transport ship USS General D. E Aultman. After his honorable discharge, he hired on with the Department of Defense at Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow and Yermo, CA where he worked for three decades as an Electronic Technician and Inspector. During this time, he earned an Associate of Arts degree from Barstow Community College, affirming his commitment to continuous life-long learning.
After his retirement from civil service, he worked as a Spanish/English translator for the insurance industry and a logistics technician for various firms. Then, for 15 years, he served as a paraeducator at Barstow Unified School District where he was beloved by students, faculty, staff and administrators. This was the source of his second career retirement at the age of 83.
Louie took great pride in civic and community duty, serving tenures as a board member of Daggett Community Services District, a poll worker for the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters, an in-field canvasser for the US Census Bureau, a member of the San Bernardino County Grand Jury, and a lector and usher for St. Joseph Catholic Church. He also rendered extended long-term assistance to elderly neighbors to honor their dignity and social value.
