Rudolph Lawrence Ortiz, was born in Raton, New Mexico on June 25th, 1936 and left his earthly confines to join his wife Marie Ortiz, and family in heaven on December 19, 2018. Rudolph was known by many names and titles including, Rudy, Sarge, Coach, and Marine. Rudy lived a full and rich life. He grew up in the beautiful mountains of Northern New Mexico. Rudy was the son of Fred O. and Zelma Ortiz. Rudy’s father mined the local mountains near his home. He was one of six children (four boys and two girls). He was most proud of his service to his country as a United States Marine for 23 years in active duty and four years in the reserves. He served as a Gunnery Sargant in his beloved Corps with tours in the Korean and Vietnamese theatres. Rudy credits the Marine Corps with putting him on the right path and giving him the focus he needed as a tough kid growing up. He was wounded in battle and received the following commendations for his service; Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal 5th Award, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, and RVN Gallantry Cross/Palm. He also served as Marksmanship Instructor and Military Science Instructor. During his military career, Rudy traveled the world. In addition to his tours in Korea and Vietnam, he lived in Kodiak AK, Okinawa Japan, San Francisco CA, 29 Palms CA, San Diego CA, Yermo CA, and Barstow CA. He was also rated Expert Level in marksmanship and competed and was ranked nationally for his prowess with the rifle. Additionally, he was a very strong swimmer. Rudy also traveled with his wife of 64 years, Marie to Mexico, Greece, Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan, Taiwan and many states within the United States.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, Rudy settled in Barstow, CA. While in Barstow, he worked his way up the ranks in the Park and Recreation District to reach the level of Director. In addition to working for the Park District, he coached the Barstow Sea Serpents, Barstow High School, The Desert School, and Desert Aquatics. Coach Rudy, or Sarge as his swimmers affectionally called him, coached thousands of kids in the high desert. Some of his swimmers went on to become national class athletes. His teams won numerous championships as well. He made an impact on many young people who respected his tough love no nonsense approach to coaching. In fact, they loved him for it! He was without a doubt, the LOUDEST voice at any athletic event. Everyone knew when Sarge was around!
Rudy was a pillar of the Barstow community. For his work with youth and the Park District, he was given numerous awards from the City of Barstow and honored in the local newspaper, The Desert Dispatch. He also assisted the Barstow High School cross country teams in the 1980s including summer training and team trips to the mountains. Rudy also served in the Disabled American Veterans Association for the Barstow chapter. He loved the Barstow Community and was a regular at Peggy Sue’s Diner, Del Taco, Jenny’s and The Senior Citizen Center. He also loved trying his luck at the casino!
Rudy and Marie had four children. One of his children, Lawrence, passed away at two weeks of age. Deborah, Steven and James are his surviving children. He is also survived by his sister Gloria and brother Robert, son in law Michael Centner, daughter in law Cynthia Victorin – Ortiz, grandchildren Sara, Zachary, Joshua, Juliana, Claire and great grandchild Scarlett. Rudy was proud a family man.
Anyone who met Rudy usually never forgot him. He had a larger than life personality and a sharp wit! He spoke his mind and had a knack for making people laugh. He made friends quickly and was loved by far too many to count. Rudy could be seen driving around town in his car with Marine Corps bumper stickers as well has his trademark Marine Corps baseball caps! He loved his New Mexican roots, especially green chili and New Mexico style Spanish music! He will be missed and it is truly and end of an era. A Marine has landed at the Pearly Gates. All is well and Sarge is ready to stand guard.
