Elray Cole, 85, passed away on June 14, 2026. Born on October 11, 1940, in Mendenhall, Elray was raised in Mendenhall, Mississippi, the son of Justice Boyd Cole and Gladys Preswood. In every season of life, he carried himself with steady courage and resilience, meeting the days with a gentle strength, an honest spirit, and a kindness that made others feel seen and valued.
Elray served his country in the Air Force, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant in 1982 after more than 20 years of faithful service. He later continued his working life with the U.S. Postal Service, known for being hard-working, dependable, and devoted to doing things the right way. His generosity was not confined to grand gestures; it lived in the everyday ways he showed up, listened well, and offered help whenever he could.
In 1967, Elray married Carla Gene Alexander. He was a beloved and cherished presence in the lives of those who knew him—patient, loyal, thoughtful, and wise, with a compassionate heart and a steady sense of humor. A natural jokester and a good listener, he had a gift for bringing ease to a room and comfort to a conversation, leaving behind an example that was quietly inspirational and deeply selfless.
Elray made his home in Bastrop, Texas. He found enjoyment in golfing, fishing, hunting, sports, working on cars and trucks, and woodworking—especially building birdhouses. He also loved watching football and UFC fighting. His faithful service extended into his church life as well, where he served as treasurer at Woodcliff Baptist Church, offering his time with care and integrity.
Elray was preceded in death by his siblings: Gaston; Mozel; Fairy Grace; Phierce Fay; Helen; Thomas; G.B.; Norman; Kendal; Mitchell; Kathleen.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen Marie Shaw (Kelly) and Monica Lynn Braneff (Jeff); his grandchildren, Cayla, Skylar, Macy, Brandon, and Kelly Jr.; and his great-grandchildren, Jayden and Elena.
Elray will be remembered with gratitude and respect—for a life marked by devotion, gentleness, and steadfast love, and for the enduring impact of a man who gave freely of himself to family, friends, and community.
