Peggy Joan (Freeze) Green, age 89, was born April 2, 1937, and died peacefully on July 11, 2026. Peggy was a beloved friend, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed by all.
Peggy was born to Melvin and Lillian Freeze in North Platte, Nebraska, was raised alongside sisters Jackie and Jeanne in Edinburg, Texas, and was a cheerleader and class favorite. She maintained a group of friends from elementary and high school, the Golden Girls, who traveled together over the years and continued Zoom call meetings every other week from the start of COVID to her passing.
After being a stay-at-home mom until all her kids entered school, she became an employee of the State of Texas and rose through the ranks until retiring from Austin State Hospital as the Director of Human Resources. She formed many life-long friends through her Austin-area state employment and residence, especially her cherished friend Carolyn Grimes and their River Rats group.
Peggy and family moved to Bastrop in 1975, and her children attended BISD schools. She was always at every game and One-Act Play to encourage both her kids and all the other teammates. When grandchildren and great-grandchildren were added to the family, she continued to show up and support them whenever possible. Any chance for a gathering – birthday, graduation, wedding, or just “we’re getting together” – was met with joy and a “what can I bring or do to help?”
After moving back to Austin for a period, she returned to reside in Bastrop in a Craftsman cottage on Pecan Street that had the same floorplan as her childhood home in Edinburg. The front porch became her favorite place to reflect and visit with neighbors.
Peggy was an extremely talented artist and craftsperson, and her family and friends reaped the benefits of her talent with gifts of stained glass, mosaics, flower arrangements, and jewelry. Her home was vibrantly colored with every change of season and holiday.
If you knew her, you knew she loved a good game – and she always managed to win! Whether it was cards, dominoes, or any game you put in front of her, she was competitive in the most entertaining way, and we all loved it. Her regular bridge and game outings were the highlights of her week. She was also an avid reader and a member of the Bastrop Ladies Reading Circle. Her participation in her church circle organization was also important to her.
Peggy is survived by her daughters and families: Kellye Green Prosise, Sydney and Nick Watts, Grayson, and Wyatt, Daniel Prosise and family, and Debra Prosise Goertz and family; Lonni Green Lee and Laine, Brian Lee, and Brian’s partner, Sophia Donaghy; Rikki Green Degelia and Jim, Laura and Sierra Alexander-Degelia, and Nola; Katie Degelia, and Katie’s partner, Toby Symonds. Survivors also include close “adopted” family members Greg and Susie Blume and Trace Lockmiller. Peggy was preceded in death by her son, J.B. Green, as well as by her parents, Melvin and Lillian Freeze, sisters and brothers-in-law, Jackie and Johnny Wall and Jeanne and Hayes Gillam.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will be held Saturday, July 25, at 10 AM at Providence Funeral Home in Bastrop, Texas. The family welcomes anyone who would like to share memories and pictures of Peggy to do so through Facebook, the Providence website, or in person during the celebration. A live stream of the celebration will also be available.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry (Bastropfoodpantry.org), which was a favored cause.
