Varughese Mathew was born on 22 March 1959 in Alleppey, Kerala, to the late P M Thomas and the late Alyeamma Thomas. He was the fourth of seven siblings, and a beloved brother to the late Ammani Varghese, Gracy Joseph, Cdr Thomas Mathew, Shaji Thomas, Shirly Abraham, and Mollykutty George. He passed away peacefully on 31 March 2026 at his home in Austin, doing what he loved—tending to his garden.
Varughese was, above all, a gentle and loving soul. He had a quiet strength about him, a calm presence that made people feel at ease, and a smile that was always ready to welcome you. He was patient, kind, and deeply good at heart—someone who carried warmth wherever he went.
His life’s journey took him across Kerala, Bombay, Pune, Dubai, and finally Austin. He embraced life with courage and openness, taking on many roles and responsibilities over the years—from his early working days across Kerala and Maharashtra to building and leading his own business in Dubai for over a decade. Yet, beyond all of this, his heart was always anchored in something deeper. His love for God led him to pursue theological studies, earning his B.Th and M.Th, and eventually being ordained as a minister in the Church of God.
He was deeply devoted to the Church of God in India, where he served faithfully for many years. As a founding pillar of the Church of God congregation in Dehu Road, he gave of himself generously—leading, guiding, and caring for others with humility and a true servant’s heart. His faith was not loud, but it was unwavering, and it shone through in the way he lived every single day.
But more than anything else, Varughese was beloved to his family. He was a loving and devoted husband to Sophy, a proud and deeply caring father to Thomson, Merin, Johnson, and Monika, and a joyful, playful grandfather to Aaron. He found his greatest happiness in the simple moments—being with his family, sharing stories, offering encouragement, and quietly standing by them through everything. He loved deeply, and he was deeply loved in return.
Though our hearts ache with his absence, we hold on to the comfort and hope that he is now at peace in the presence of the Lord. The love he gave, the faith he lived, and the warmth he brought into our lives will remain with us always.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” ~Matthew 25: 21 and 23
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 beginning at 9:00 a.m. at River Valley Christian Church in Bastrop, Texas. He will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery immediately following the service.
