Beloved by many, Charlotte Antal, 97, of the Sun Lakes community in Banning, passed away peacefully after a life full of courage, generosity, humor and gratitude. Right up until her last few weeks, Charlotte followed current events and continued to make new friends while cherishing lifelong friends and family. Born in Germany, Charlotte was orphaned at a young age. She lived with her maternal grandparents until she was sent to a boarding school in Switzerland, where she received an excellent education and learned to speak English, French and a bit of Italian in addition to her native German. During the early days of World War II, Charlotte fled Germany, ending up in the Italian Alps. Thanks to her fluency in languages, Charlotte became the translator for an American general stationed at the famous hotel Miramonti in Cortina d’Ampezzo. For the 70+ years thereafter, Charlotte recalled with awe the beauty of that place. Having married an American soldier, Charlotte emigrated to the United States and became a US citizen, a status for which she was forever grateful. Sadly, her marriage ended soon after her beautiful daughter Yvonne Doone was born. Despite the challenges posed by being a young, German, single mother in post-WWII America, Charlotte found her way, with the help of new friends. Eventually, Charlotte became the executive secretary for several large businesses. In 1966 Charlotte married Michael “Jerry” Antal. Over the years, Charlotte came to regard Jerry’s two sons, Michael and Jim, as her own children. She repeatedly expressed wonder and gratitude for ending up with such a loving family after having lost her birth family due to sickness and war. Charlotte deeply grieved the deaths of her husband Jerry, her daughter Yvonne and her stepson Michael. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her stepson Jim, her daughters in law Ann and Cindy, her grandchildren Dickinson, Rachel, Luke and Mark and her great-grandchildren Chaska, Jacy, Linden, Logan and Nailah. Charlotte’s burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Thursday, November 8 at Stewart Sunnyslope Cemetery in Beaumont, CA.
The family is so grateful to the nurses and caregivers from hospice, as well as those from The Lakes, who helped make Charlotte’s last weeks a blessing, full of love and wonderful care. In gratitude, we ask that, in lieu of flowers, those who would like to honor Charlotte’s life make a donation to “VNA California” – memo: “Donation in memory of Charlotte Antal” and send it to:
