It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edward Joseph McDonald, a devoted husband, father, economist, and gardener. Ed passed away at the age of 81 in Tucson, Arizona on April 20, 2023.
Born in Utica, New York, in 1941, Ed loved animals, the outdoors, and working in his father's veterinary hospital in his youth. He was an accomplished economist, working for the United States Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. for many years. He was known for his analytical skills and sharp mind, which he applied to his work in the field of economics.
Outside of work, Ed took joy in his family, and had a passion for gardening, particularly for growing big juicy tomatoes. He took great pride in tending to his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with his friends and family.
In addition to his many accomplishments as an economist, gardener, and devoted husband and father, Ed also proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He volunteered to serve for three years, demonstrating his commitment to his fellow citizens and the values of service and sacrifice that he held dear.
His time in the military helped shape the person he became, and his dedication to his country continued throughout his life. Whether through his work in the Commerce Department, or through his political activism, Ed always sought to make a positive impact on the world around him.
The memory of Ed will live on through the many lives he touched, and his legacy as a patriot, economist, gardener, and family man will be remembered with deep admiration and respect. Perhaps most importantly, Ed was a dedicated Father who placed a high value on education. He instilled in his sons the importance of learning, ensuring they had the tools and skills they needed to master literacy and numeracy. He was always there to offer guidance, encouragement, and support, and his love and devotion will be deeply missed.
Ed is survived by his two sons, Shawn Edward Mcdonald and Kevin Tatum McDonald, who will remember him always with love and gratitude. He will also be remembered by his friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched during his 81 years on this earth.
A private family service will be held to celebrate his life and honor his memory.
