I had the privilege of having Ms. Baker as my third grade teacher. She may be gone but the memories are still there.

I have been so busy taking care of my father (post-surgery/stroke) that I have not shared my memories of Joya.  I have sweet memories of her smile and laughter.  Often, we lamented the “blessing” we shared in naturally curly hair.  I could always count on Joya for great book recommendations.  We shared a special bond as we spent many hours together during Phil’s hospitalizations.  We kept each other updated and took turns playing the electronic Yahtzee game.  Joya was a loving aunt to my children and a cherished sister/friend.  I still reach for a pen to jot a newsy note of cheer for her.  Butterflies, sunflowers, purple anything…remind me of her.  I am saddened that I was unable to finish the holiday lap quilt I was making for her.  She always enjoyed gifts made by hand with love.  Joya, I think of you every day.  I promise to be there for Phil as he deals with the colossal loss of you—the love of his life.  Rest now, my dear.  I love you still…

To lose a soulmate is like no other experience. Two memories fill my heart: "Kiss me" - the last words she spoke to me while fully conscious - symbolic of the bond of committed love that even death cannot break. The second was when the hospice minister completed his prayers for Joya and began singing, "Precious Jesus, Take My Hand." While her sister, Dana, and I stood by the bed in the living room, we experienced her peaceful death. Before the minister finished singing, Jesus had taken Joya's hand bringing her into his embrace. I am grateful to my family, each member loving her unconditionally and treasuring her kindness, gentleness, sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and the love in which she immersed us. My nephew and nieces knew her as "Auntie; my sisters and their husbands considered her a "Sister;" my grandparents loved her as a "Grand-daughter." When the family gathered in a large condo at Bodega Bay to celebrate dad's 90th birthday, Joya said to him, "First, you were my seventh grade teacher. Next, when I became a school teacher, you were my principal. Now, you are my dad." Her love was freely given, gratefully received, and returned to her in abundance. I shall remember always those whose loving presence was consistent, palpable, and faithful throughout the Multiple Systems Atrophy journey. Thank you for taking every opportunity to visit and shower her with love. Phil 

My memories of Joya are filled with excitement, laughter, unconditional love and acceptance. She was the first person I knew that had a whole room devoted to arts and crafts. I didn’t  realize the impact her creativity had on me until going through pictures with my dear uncle Flip and reminiscing about those good times. I was an impulsive child that learned lessons repeatedly. I remember the pool walls having an abrasive texture that would shred the skin on the bottom of my toes as I pushed off the sides amidst  sibling swimming competitions. Joya never scorned or judged me for continuing to push off to gain the advantage and instead would comfort me in my distress and bandage up my little toes. And then do it again the next time we came over to swim because I never learned that lesson. I remember traveling, seeing plays, family dinners and celebrations being brighter by her presence. I miss her hugs, bright smile and generosity of spirit. 
Joya was patient, loving and kind. I’m forever grateful to have her influence in my life and for the example she made in her daily living. I love you Auntie Joya.  

Joya always had a laugh at the ready.  We had so many good, fun, silly times traveling and just talking.  Right now I think I can hear her laugh.  I know she lived a full life and gave so much to so many. 

Mrs Baker was my 4th grade teacher, She inspired me to become a teacher! I loved her class and felt soo much love from her! My favorite memory of her class is that we got to make whale pinatas! Through the years she guided me and my career in teaching! The world has lost a wonderful woman! Thank you Joya Baker for being an inspiration to soo many! You will be missed! 

Joya Janelle Baker will always be remembered as a loving grandmother to my son Ryley. Ryley was the greatest joy of her life besides her son Matt . She was always laughing and having a wonderful time with our family. She took care of Ryley in the most loving way. Ryley loved his grandma very much as we all did.  She welcomed me into the family also in the most loving way and was a most integral part of our lives.  This loss is tremendous.  Rest In Peace Grandma Joya.

Phil, I remember when Joya came to our methods class at U of R. Such a heart for education and people. My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend. Let me know if there is anything you need or anything I can do. Kenny

I will always remember Joya as a happy, vibrant, and thoughtful person who dearly loved her sister and was fun to be with.  I have fond memories our downtown wine tastings in Redlands, Disneyland adventures, trip to Italy, and other parties/get-togethers.  My memories of Joya include her great smile, laugh, and happy-go-lucky self.  As her name implies, she was a joy to be around, and she was loved and appreciated by those who knew her best.  May she rest in peace knowing the love, kindness, and joy she shared on this Earth inspired and brought happiness to those around her.  I feel blessed to have known Joya.

I remember when  ms Baker was principal at hoffer  and I was a yard duty. I was outside teaching the kids how to put grass between their thumbs and blow so it would whistle lol. A little while later she calls me up to office and says what is this your teaching the kids how to blow grass lol I said o lol that dont sound good. Kids were so excited to tell her they were outside blowing grass with Ms Tina lol lol lol made me laugh ok Ms Baker we will say whistling grass lol. Ms Baker was such a great person and principal I will miss her very much.

Phil, I wish I could find the words of comfort for you. You will hold Joya in your heart forever and the love that you two shared will comfort you in the coming time .My heart aches for you my dear cousin , through all this pain ,please know how much I love you and the tremendous help you were to me at my time of loss, I love you 💜  Jolene 

Dear Mr. Baker,
I am sending my condolences on the passing of Joya.  I had the pleasure of working with her in Banning at Hoffer School.  She was my first principal and I learned so much from her about being patient, being real, and how to accept our students and their families and show the most respect to them.  She gave me my first teaching job and I will always remember her very fondly.  I am so sorry for your loss.

My message is for Phil.  Sadly I never met your bride but as a ‘little sister’ from our childhood, I wanted to reach out and let you know you are in my heart, thoughts and prayers!  My heart is broken for your loss and merely send you all my strength to help you through your pain and heartbreaking time.  I am here for you if only to give you a shoulder to lean on.
