Maria was born on February 14, 1927. Her birth certificate was posted on the 15th but to us, she was a Valentine baby. She was the third child and first daughter in her family. They then welcomed 4 more children. She told stories about growing up chasing after her two older brothers and caring for the younger siblings.
At the age of 23, she married Rodolfo. She then welcomed her first son, Ramiro, followed by Silvia and Rudy within the next two years. After the birth of her 4th child, Oscar, the family packed up and moved to the US, first settling in Texas where Juan was born then moving to California. After arriving she welcomed Severo, Elisa, and Mario.
Maria was known for being a wonderful cook. She could work magic with a pound of hamburger and a bag of rice. As her children grew up and started bringing friends home, they marveled at what a wonderful cook she was. Guests never left hungry. She is best known for her tamales (especially the ones made at the tamale party at the Lara house), fideo, gorditas and her empanadas de calabaza.
Sewing was her passion. She would make quilts for all the new arrivals in her life. She made prom dresses, hand embroidered and crocheted too many beautiful creations to mention.
Mostly, she kept busy caring for her large family and finally her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A baby that visited didn’t have to be a Valdez or Cabrera for her to be their Abuelita. She just was. Her face would light up when a baby came for a visit.
We will miss her love and how she gave selflessly to help others. She was loved, respected and admired as a wife, mother, sister and friend.
