On August 25, 1962, Melvin was united in holy matrimony to Cleo N. West. From this union, their beloved daughter, Yvonne “Bonnie” Stokes, was born. After 32 years of marriage, Melvin and Cleo eventually parted ways. Melvin later found companionship and love again when he wed Beulah Lee. Together, they shared a deep commitment to their faith and personal growth. During this chapter of his life, Melvin reached several spiritual milestones, including completing the “Discovering the Centre” Spiritual Growth Class and receiving his Ordination as a Deacon through the San Bernardino Christian Centre.

Even after retiring from both the U.S. Air Force Reserve and the United States Postal Service, Melvin continued operating his Jani-King franchise, providing services throughout the Inland Empire.
