Benjamin (Benny) Theodore Porterfield II, 69-year-old lifelong Beckley resident, passed away at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital after battling a relapse of a chronic illness. Benny was preceded in death by his father Ben Porterfield and mother Cora (Oakes) Porterfield, sisters Jean Vandal and Betty Wriston. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Peggy Sue Porterfield; brothers Pat (Jackie) Porterfield, Mark (Joann) Porterfield and sister Carole Dawson; his son Benjamin (Ted) Porterfield III, Ted’s partner Julie Henning, and ex-spouse Heather Shafer; his daughter Cora Porterfield Stover, her husband Phillip L. Stover, and ex-spouse Johnny B. Adkins; grandsons Cory Porterfield, and Daniel Porterfield; granddaughters, Aurelia Porterfield, and Miranda Stover; his many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Benny was a 1969 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He spent most of his years as a professional small engine repair mechanic, serving 17 years at Beckley Feed and Hardware then retired from Nell Jean Enterprises in 2004. He was very proud to have been awarded master service technician status by several small engine and lawn equipment manufacturers over the course of his career. He had a wealth of mechanical knowledge and loved to help others with ailing machines, even up to his last days. Baking, cooking, and gardening were some of Benny’s favorite hobbies. He was well known for making wonderful bread and rolls to share with friends, family, and neighbors every single week. Benny loved trips to Myrtle Beach, photography, playing pool, poker, bridge, and road trips exploring with his Peggy Sue. He was always telling amazing stories to anyone that would take the time to listen. He was a selfless person, that often took friends and neighbors that didn’t have their own transportation or was too ill to drive themselves wherever they needed, and never asked for anything in return. He enjoyed knowing he was a good servant to those in need. Benny will truly be missed by many. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 10th from 6-8 pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Dr, Beckley, West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a local food bank would be appreciated.
