She was the granddaughter of Robert and Janie Toney and Walter and Grace Massey. Betty's parents provided a home that focused on the love of Christ. At the age of 11, she accepted Christ and was baptized at the Maple Valley Baptist Church. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Betty was the last remaining member of her immediate family. She has two nephews and two nieces: Joey Voiers (d), Leslie Hatcher, Cynthia Williams, and Tammy Williams Perdue.
