Carol Sue James died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 7 at 9:45 am at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. In mere moments she went from joking with the technician to praising her Savior.

Born in Bud, WV Feb 3, 1942, she was the only daughter of Velmer and Delma McKinney (both deceased) of Mullens, WV. She married Kenneth Duke James (deceased) of Crab Orchard, WV in 1964. She is survived by her brother, Vernon Hurt, of Rowlett, Texas. She is also survived by her son, Kenneth Duke James, Jr., her daughter-in-law, Stacey Sue James, and her grandchildren, Joshua Haddon James and Anna Elizabeth James, all of Mebane, NC.

Carol Sue graduated valedictorian from Mullens High School in 1959, received her bachelor's degree from WVU in 1963, and later received a master's degree from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. A career school teacher, she taught in Virginia Beach, VA and in Mullens, WV. She primarily taught math, having many students receive awards in state competitions. She also led activities such as gymnastics, field hockey, tennis, and chess. She moved from Mullens to Mebane in 2010 to be near her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, much to their delight.

Carol Sue's life was characterized by her amazing devotion to family and her sacrificial giving of herself and of gifts. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and would often sing praises to Him in her home until COPD limited her ability to do this. She loved Christmas, making over a dozen different kinds of cookies and treats because family had different favorites.

The funeral/memorial service will be held in the mausoleum at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, WV at 1:00 Saturday, May 18, 2019. Instead of flowers, people are asked to send a donation in her honor to Bradford Academy, 939 S Third Street, Mebane, NC 27302.

You and Kenny were my close neighbors for years. Very special people to me. Thank you for your kindness and the help with Math tutoring. I still don’t care for math. LoL. Light, love and prayers for your family. Our street will never be the same. Rest in precious peace Ms. James.

Mrs. James was a wonderful teacher that cared about her students. I loved going to her house with the middle school cheerleaders for the fun Christmas parties she held for us. I am so sorry for your loss.

It is with much sadness that I read about the passing of Carol Sue. Mother and I considered her a wonderful friend and colleague. I worked as a school counselor with her at Wyoming East High School until her retirement. She was truly an inspiration for all. I will never forget the good times we had--American Idol concert in Charlotte and our Miami/Key West vacation to name a few. Carol Sue blessed so many people with her faith and kindness. I feel so fortunate to have known her and called her "friend." Remembering your dear mother and wishing you comfort. . .

Family-I am saddened to learn of Carol Sue’s passing, even though there’s comfort in knowing she is now home with our Lord and Savior. I live across the street from her townhome in Copperstone. Although I didn’t get to know her very well in the short time I’ve lived across the street, I can say that she was friendly and an inspiration. I recall last Halloween when she was sitting out on her porch handing out candy. I went over and we chatted a bit. I was so moved by her dedication to the holiday and the children. I will definitely miss her presence. I pray that God will comfort you during time of loss.

Kenny Duke, Stacy and family, I am so sorry to learn of Carol Sue’s passing. I know it was a shock to you. Even though I haven’t seen her for a long time I will miss knowing she no longer near you. She was a sweet and kind lady. I’m out of town and can’t attend the service. I will be thinking of you and hoping all your good memories will help you through this sad loss.
