Charles Edward Underwood, 86, of Beckley passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022 in his home following a short illness.
Born, August 5, 1935, in Elk Ridge, he was the son of Oscar and Madge Underwood of Oak Grove.
Charles worked as a safety inspection specialist and top car mechanic for Raleigh Motor Sales for most of his career. At age 55, he worked for ten years as the Auto Mechanic Instructor at ACT vocational school, retiring at age 65. He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. Hunting for deer, turkey and wild boar was his passion, and he was an excellent marksman. He was also a bee keeper and at one time had 22 hives of bees. He had a giant, unique personality and never knew a stranger. He was always glad to talk, and to get to know you.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother Danny, and his sister and brother in law Thelma and Ray Shawver.
Survivors include his wife Betty (née Sigmon), and his two daughters, Robin Harrah (Drexel), and Tammy Martin (Ralph) of Cincinnati, Ohio. His two brothers, Woody (Linda), and David (Vicki). He was a proud Papaw Honey to 3 granddaughters, Tori Smith (Corey) currently stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Linda, California, Tara Crow( Kyle) of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Alyse Canaday of Cincinnati, Ohio, and to 9 great grandchildren, Bela, Lily, Mia, Teo, Eli, Dax, Margot, Finn and Griffin. He was an uncle to a multitude of nephews and nieces.
Graveside services will be held 2:00PM Thursday, February 3, 2022 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley with Reverend Drexel Harrah officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
