Donnis Jean Been
October 18, 1926 – April 20, 2021
Donnis Jean Been, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, April 20th in Woodstock, GA at the age of 94. Donnis was born October 18, 1926 in Hacker Valley, WV to Elza and Flora (Anderson) Cowger. In 1948 she married Warren Been of Pickens, WV. A fastidious homemaker, Donnis delighted in creating a beautiful home and delicious meals for her family. She enjoyed dancing the Polka, singing hymns, and shopping. Her quick-wit and humor always brought a smile to the face of those around her, and her protective nature made her a tenacious advocate for those less fortunate. Reading mystery novels, working on word searches and anything ‘West Virginia’ were some of her favorite hobbies. Later in life, she loved to go on car rides so that she could enjoy time with family and the beautiful trees and flowers along the way. Children and animals always brought happiness to Donnis. She will be remembered as small-but-mighty and big in spirit. A woman of integrity and honesty with a strong work-ethic, she instilled those same values in her children. Donnis knew that giving it your best was important, but it was also important to accept help when needed. She was a tender-hearted mother and grandmother and was always proud of her family. Donnis is survived by her daughters Sharon (Bill) Peters of Charleston, WV, and Jan (Sam) Wehby of Woodstock, GA; her granddaughters Kristi (Michael) Maddox of Charleston, WV, Ami (Phillip) Reichner of Charleston, SC, and Alison (Aaron) Johnson of Canton, GA; and several nephews and nieces. Preceding her in death are her parents and her husband, Warren. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 25th from 2:00pm-4:00pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley, WV. Masks will be required. Following, she will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, an organization that was dear to Donnis’s heart and to which she frequently donated. https://www.stjude.org/donate/pm.html?frequency_selected=0&sc_icid=impactgiving-donate-bttn-top A special thanks is extended to the staff at Oakes Towne Lake Senior Living, Woodstock, GA.

Donnis was a great woman. I've known her my entire life. She is basically family. I'll miss all of the countless times that we all played Uno in her dining room. I wish that I could've spent more time with her.
