Elmo Johnson

Elmo was born September 13, 1948, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Erma Collins Trent and James Edwin Trent raised Elmo and his siblings in the Baileysville area of Wyoming County. He was a 1966 Graduate of Baileysville High School and proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps. After his military duty was over, Elmo worked as a bricklayer for several years and would often show his family the businesses and buildings that he worked so hard to complete. His time as a bricklayer led to his final career in the refractory industry, where he was well known and respected as a hard worker and an honorable businessman.

Elmo was preceded in death by his parents, James Edwin and Erma Trent, and his siblings, James “Mo” Trent, Jesse “Lynn” Trent, and his baby sister, Brenda. Elmo was the last piece remaining of his immediate family.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife of almost 50 years, Connie Stacy Johnson. His oldest son, Scotty (Alicia) of Mooresville, NC, and his son Richard (Amber) of Sumter, SC. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Randall Stacy, Jeff Stacy, Kopperston, Rick Stacy, Marshalltown, Iowa.

Becoming a grandfather created all-new depths of love in Elmo. His lessons, the duck joke, stories, and blowing straw papers created memories that will never fade. He was a warrior and was invincible to his grandchildren. Derek (Kate), Evan (Carly), Kynli, Nick, Ava, Mason, and Nathan are left to carry on the traditions of brisket and beef jerky making, wet willies, and Chick-fil-A nuggets with ketchup. Many nieces, nephews, family, and friends are also left to grieve the loss of this well-loved man.

The Johnson family has entrusted Elmo’s services to their long-time friend and pastor, Rev Dewey Lowe, and the staff of Blue Ridge Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.

The service will be 3:00 PM Monday, August 10, 2026, with friends visiting from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at Blue Ridge Funeral Home with Military Honors conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard, and burial to follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
