Freida Hazel Thompson, age 99, of Beaver, passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2020 at Pine Lodge in Beckley. Born on March 14, 1921 in Lilly Brook, WV, she was the daughter of the late Robert Felix Gunnoe and Hazel Mae Hurt Gunnoe.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buel Elmer Thompson; son, Lowell Winston Thompson; sister, Hortense Philpott; brothers, Robert Felix Gunnoe, Jr. and Dan Gunnoe; sons-in-law, Tommy Joe Thompson and Tom Bailey.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Pat Thompson, Peggy Bailey, Tim Thompson, Mike Thompson and his wife, Lisa, and Cecylia Lafferty and husband, Roger; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Freida was a member of Blue Jay United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She served as past President of the United Methodist Women’s Group and was the church historian. She was a life-long member of the Beckley Art Group where she was an accomplished artist and an award winning quilt maker.
She had a “heart of gold,” being a contributor to foreign missions for under privileged children. She was also an avid gardener.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 pm in the Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral home with Pastor Randy Smithton officiating. Burial will follow the services in Hurt Trail Family Cemetery within Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
Honoring Mrs. Thompson as pallbearers will be her family and close friends.
