James Lonnie Bruce was born on December 17, 1954 in Beckley, West Virginia to the late James Rodgers Bruce and Norma Marcelle Garretson Bruce. He passed away peacefully in his home in Big Pine Key, Florida on December 17, 2018 with his family by his side.
James is survived by his wife, Sarah Jackson Bruce; his daughter, Mary and son in law, Cody Moeller; his granddaughter, Cora Jo Moeller; and his brother, Alan Eugene Bruce.
His father’s navy career took them to Jacksonville, FL where he grew up and graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in building construction, Go Gators! He then began his first career as a cost engineer, building large projects around the United States. James changed careers in 1997 and started working for Monroe County Public Works as a Building Maintenance Administrator where he retired in 2016.
James enjoyed music, studying genealogy (especially his WV roots) but his true hobby was finding treasures at yard sales. Of course he also enjoyed time with his beloved wife and daughter. The past 6 years he gained a son which he really enjoyed spending time with grilling, looking up genealogy and watching Gator football. However, the best time of his life was his last 9 months, spending time with his granddaughter Cora Jo.
James was a kind and gentle man to all who knew him.
Funeral Service will take place at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on December 21, 2018 at 2:00 pm.
Friends may gather with the family from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.
