

He served in the United States Army for 4 years before beginning a long career as a mechanic. James worked for Blackburn Ford for 42 years before his retirement.
James loved to spend his time fishing and riding around. He spent many hours on the road listening to old country music.
He is preceded in death by his father Delbert Canterbury; mother Susie Canterbury; and his brother Charles Canterbury.
James is survived by his son Lawrence E. (Michele) Canterbury; daughters Melissa (Derrick) Gavin-Smith and Jenny Canterbury; brother Lawrence P. Canterbury; grandchildren Lawrence “Bo” (Chase) E. Canterbury Jr, Michael (Madison) Canterbury, Preston Canterbury, James (Najah) Canterbury, Javonta Byrd, Draven Burris, Aveyana Gavin-Smith, and Leleyana Gavin-Smith; and great-grandchildren Evelyn Canterbury, Bella Canterbury, and Sophie Canterbury.
A special thanks to the West Virginia Veteran’s Association Hospice Care for the care they gave James.
In accordance to his wishes, James will be cremated at a later date. Blue Ridge Funeral Home is honored to serve the family.
