Born February 19, 1945, in Beaver, West Virginia, he was born to the late Tracey and Emma Shannon. James dedicated his life to his family, community, and country.
James was drafted in the United States Army at a young age 20 and served with the 1st Infantry Division, famously known as the “Big Red One.” James was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for heroic service in combat.
Following his military service, James devoted an extraordinary 50 years to the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department. Throughout his time there, he served in many roles, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters. In his later years, he became a mentor and advisor to younger members, continuing to shape the department with his wisdom and experience.
In his free time, he enjoyed antique cars, watching westerns, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a true “people person” who never met a stranger. Whether through the many places he lived or the jobs he held, he formed lasting friendships everywhere he went. He had a special gift for making others feel welcomed and valued—and if you knew him, chances are you had a nickname. His personality left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.
Preceding his death are his parents, father Tracey Shannon, mother Emma Cooper Shannon, his sister Shirley Meece.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 47 years Teresa Shannon; his children, Jamie Patton and husband Billy, Michelle Kinder and husband JD, Brian Shannon and wife Amber, Dwaine Shannon, Anthony Shannon, and Bobbi Renae; his grandchildren—Aidan “#1 grandson” Blake, Garrett “Whistle Pete” or “#2 grandson” Blake, Jake “The Snake” Kinder, Cole “The Bruiser” Kinder, Breona Shannon, Gavin and Holden Patton and many friends and family.
James truly left a mark on his community but none more than his family.
He was known as “Jimmy” or “Sam” to many. He also enjoyed coining others with nicknames. His grandkids are a prime example. Each of them carries forth his humor and unforgettable spirit. His life will be remembered not only for his years of service and dedication, but for the laughter and the countless lives he touched along the way.
Funeral services for James will be held on Wednesday, April 15th, 2026 at 1PM at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior. James will then be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens following the service.
