Born and raised in Fayetteville, surrounded by the beauty of nature in the mountains, he spent much of his free time outdoors, whether it was on two wheels or four, he enjoyed the fresh air and freedom that came from being outside. He grew up attending, and continued to attend the Gatewood Brethren Church throughout his life. He was a people person through and through, whether it was his general easy-going personality or how he always tried to make those around him laugh he was well-liked by all who met him, traits that made him an excellent salesman but an even more beloved friend. He enjoyed all the time he could get with his family and friends, sitting down to a good meal, spending time with his darling wife Patricia, and coming up with the craziest, silliest stories anyone ever heard just to get a laugh. He will forever be remembered as a kind, caring, loving, and over all incredible man by all who knew him.
Greeting him at the Pearly Gates are his grandmother Nilah Ashwell, who helped raised him as her own and loved him just as dearly; his mother Gloria Ashwell Vest, and a beloved uncle, Charles Shumaker.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Patricia Ashwell; an aunt Lana Shumaker; cousins Charles Shumaker Jr., Heather Ball, Krista Shumaker, and Johnathan Shumaker; as well as his sisters-in-law Tracey Leak and Tonya Sawyers; and pets, Briscoe, Gypsy, and Pixie whom he adored completely.
A funeral service officiated by pastor Scott Lester will be held Wednesday March 18th, 2026, at 1pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Home of Beckley WV.
